What is the REPO Rate?

The Repo rate (or the Repurchase Rate) is the interest rate at which the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) lends money for the short term to the Indian banks.

Banks need to borrow from the RBI to maintain liquidity and as and when they face a shortage of funds. In general, the RBI uses the repo rates to control inflation in India by controlling the flow of money in the economy, though it is not just about that.

A high repo rate means that the banks which borrow from the RBI will have to pay higher interest to the RBI. This discourages banks from borrowing (at least theoretically), and this, in turn, reduces the supply of money in the economy, thereby controlling inflation indirectly. So that is, in a way, the relationship between inflation and repo rates in India.

On the other hand, a low repo rate means that the banks which borrow from the RBI will have to pay lower interest to the RBI. This encourages banks to borrow and increase the supply of money in the economy, thereby fuelling demand and growth.
